The 12 Foundations
The 12 Foundations give you a way to step back and look at your life a little more broadly, including the things that shape how healthy, connected, engaged and fulfilled you feel.
They’re not a checklist, and there’s no right way to work through them. They’re there to help you notice what’s going well and worth protecting, what may need a little more attention, and possibilities you may not have thought much about before.
Some may stand out more than others, or there may be something important to you that falls outside the Foundations altogether.
1. Movement & Strength
How well your body supports the life you want to live.
Movement and strength help protect your health, independence and confidence, while making it easier to keep doing the things that matter to you.
2. Nourishment & Energy
How the way you eat supports your health, energy and enjoyment of life.
Nourishment is less about perfection and more about finding an approach that helps you feel well, maintain your energy and support your health over time.
3. Rest, Sleep & Renewal
The rest and recovery your body and mind need.
Good sleep, rest and time to recharge affect everything from energy and mood to resilience, concentration and how well we feel from day to day.
4. Presence & Inner Calm
The role that slowing down, being present and finding moments of calm can play in your life.
Finding moments of calm can help reduce stress, bring greater perspective and make it easier to notice what matters rather than always moving on to the next thing.
5. Purpose, Meaning & Growth
The people, interests and experiences that give your life meaning and keep you growing.
Purpose can come from many places. What matters is having people, interests, goals or experiences that give you a reason to stay engaged, continue growing and feel that what you do matters.
6. Connection & Belonging
The relationships and connections that help you feel supported and part of something.
Long-standing relationships matter, but so do opportunities to meet new people, deepen friendships and feel part of something. Connection and belonging can add enormously to the quality of our lives.
7. Emotional Resilience
How you respond, adapt and regain your footing when life changes or doesn’t go as planned.
Resilience isn’t about avoiding difficult emotions. It’s about being able to work through challenges, regain your footing and continue moving forward in a way that feels right for you.
8. Joy, Fun & Play
The things that bring enjoyment, laughter and a sense of fun to your life.
Laughter, fun, playfulness and having things to look forward to aren’t extras. They bring energy to everyday life and help keep us engaged with the world around us.
9. Creativity & Self-Expression
The ways you express your interests, ideas and different parts of who you are.
Creativity can show up through art, music, writing, making things, problem-solving, conversation or trying something new. It gives us another way to explore our interests, ideas and parts of ourselves that may not always have had room to emerge.
10. Nature & Surroundings
How the places around you affect the way you feel and live.
Time in nature, the communities we live in and the environments we create around ourselves can influence our energy, mood, activity, sense of calm and connection to the world around us.
11. Contribution & Service
The ways you use your experience, time or abilities to make a difference that matters to you.
Helping others, supporting a cause, mentoring, volunteering or contributing to your community can strengthen connection and meaning while allowing you to make a difference in ways that feel personally worthwhile.
12. Life Beyond Work
What you want life to include as work takes up less of your time.
For some, this may come with retirement. For others, it may happen gradually. Either way, having more freedom over your time can raise new questions about identity, purpose, relationships, interests and how you want your days to feel. It can also create opportunities to explore parts of life that may have had less room before.
Where do you begin?
You don’t need to focus on all twelve. The Foundations are there to widen the lens and help you notice what stands out for you.
You might ask yourself:
What’s working well and worth protecting?
What matters most to me now?
What do I want more of?
What would I like to change, explore or make more room for?
One Foundation may stand out. Several may be connected. Or you may discover that something else matters more.
Where you begin is up to you.
